Background of the study
Storytelling sessions in libraries have emerged as a powerful tool to stimulate cognitive development among children. In Okrika Local Government Area, libraries are increasingly adopting storytelling as a medium to engage young minds and foster creativity, language skills, and critical thinking (Emeka, 2023). These sessions often involve interactive narratives that encourage children to participate, ask questions, and explore imaginative worlds, thereby enhancing their cognitive processing and language acquisition. Research indicates that early exposure to storytelling can improve memory, comprehension, and problem-solving abilities, laying a strong foundation for academic success (Ngozi, 2024). In addition to cognitive benefits, storytelling sessions promote social skills and cultural awareness by passing down traditional values and local folklore (Chidera, 2023). Despite these benefits, there are challenges such as limited program frequency, insufficient training of storytellers, and infrastructural constraints that may affect the overall impact of storytelling on cognitive development. This study investigates how storytelling sessions in libraries contribute to children’s cognitive growth and identifies ways to optimize these sessions for better educational outcomes (Ifeanyi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although storytelling sessions are implemented in libraries across Okrika, their impact on children’s cognitive development remains inconsistently documented. Some libraries report positive outcomes, while others struggle with inadequate resources, irregular scheduling, and poorly trained facilitators. These issues hinder the potential cognitive benefits that storytelling can offer. Moreover, a lack of standardized evaluation metrics makes it challenging to quantify improvements in cognitive skills. This study aims to address these gaps by critically assessing the effectiveness of storytelling sessions and proposing recommendations to ensure that these initiatives consistently contribute to children’s cognitive development (Amadi, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the impact of storytelling sessions on children’s cognitive development.
To identify challenges limiting the effectiveness of these sessions.
To propose measures to optimize storytelling for enhanced cognitive benefits.
Research questions
What is the impact of library storytelling sessions on children’s cognitive skills?
What challenges hinder the effectiveness of these sessions?
How can storytelling practices be improved to enhance cognitive development?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it underscores the importance of storytelling in cognitive development among children. The findings will provide actionable insights for libraries and educational policymakers, enabling them to design more effective storytelling programs that foster early cognitive growth and academic success (Uche, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the topic only.
